First things first, this film is really good and I highly recommend it. Doesn’t matter if your ten or ninety-two, if you are a fan, Spider-Man into the Spiderverse is right up your alley.
The Story: Miles Morales is bitten by a radioactive spider. Now, with the help of five other Spider-Mans from different universes, he must become a superhero to save his world.
The Animation: The animation in this film is gorgeous. This is a fact. The designs look like they’ve been lifted straight out of a comic book with the SFX literally written out on screen. The film makes full use of their medium. Each universe and their characters have their own unique style; with SP//dr character design mimicking Japanese cartoons and Spider-Man Noir’s color palette in grayscale.
The Music: The music is also stellar in its own rights; featuring artists such as Nicki Minaj, Jaden Smith, and Post Malone. The composition of the songs is used brilliantly to amp up the tension and help to heighten your emotions. There is this one musical rift that frequently shows up whenever one of Spider-Man’s villains, Prowler, shows up. This same rift is actually recycled into Miles’ main theme which, without getting into any spoilers, is a brilliant way of highlighting Miles’ emotional journey throughout the film.
The Universe: Each of the different Spider-Man’s are well fleshed out, and visual clues and context really make you feel like each of these characters have their own struggles outside of the main storyline. Peter B. Parker’s story in particular, as a tired and worn out Spider-man, really adds to Miles’ own story as he comes into his own as the new Spider-Man. These character arcs feel complete on their own, with a beginning and conclusion within the film. At the same time they don’t eat up screen time or detract from the main plot.
Stan Lee: There is, of course, a Stan Lee cameo. This review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning. With the comic book legend passing in 2018, it’s unclear if this is Stan Lee’s last cameo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether it is or isn’t, it’s a perfect spot to leave off on, with his words in the film being a great inspiration to both Miles and the viewers.
